Crushing on Big, Bad, Oversized Ornaments

November 19, 2012
Last week, this happened:

And I really didn't think I was ready for 18 inches of snow--but as it turns out, it wasn't so bad to bundle up and head out or drink cocoa and watch a Christmas classic, okay--Elf.  And when the snow didn't stop after the first day, we thought, "This is it.  It's officially the holiday season!  Let's break out the tree."  So we did:

Yes, only a few days after we decorated for Thanksgiving.  Aye, we love it all around here. We aren't really done decorating the tree--that we decked out with blues and golds--but it has a good start.  In addition to this year's ornament (we buy an ornament and date it each year) I am just itching to add some oversized....somethings to the tree.  This tree, with a bunch of oversized bulbs and stars, has officially become my inspiration.

Yowza! (I am fairly certain this image is from Country Living, but I can't find the exact source link) We'll keep you posted when and how (to DIY or to buy?) these big bad ornaments make it onto our tree soon. So, while Christmas doesn't officially kick off until after Thanksgiving for most people (we get it), a little bit has weaseled its way into our living room in the form of an in-progress tree--and let me just say, it's not bad at all. :)

Also, that snow??  Melted completely. Also, not bad. When do you typically put up the ol' tree?

  1. I'll do you one worse. I made our stockings and have already hung them up! We are entertsining for Thanksgiving and thought, hey, why not!

  2. Your tree is so pretty! I love the blue & gold combo. I've seen a ton of oversized ornaments at the dollar stores. They're going fast though so I'd try and snatch some up soon!

I always try and wait to put my tree up until the weekend after Thanksgiving but it may go up Thursday night if I can't help myself haha

  3. i definitely wait until after the thanksgiving meal...but not too long after. i have been known to start on thanksgiving evening with the christmas music and hall-decking.

  4. Just so you guys know your blog is a good break from a long class lol.

WE LOVE ELF. BTW I definitely bought a bunch of flavored hot chocolate for Megs and I the other day.

  5. Christmas Eve, ideally, though sometimes earlier (for specific company or for ease of scheduling). Stays up until Candlemas (Feb 2) theoretically (sometimes earlier if it's a fire hazard, sometimes later because really who wants to take down a sparkly tree when spring is still not imaginable?).

  6. I remember a similar tradition growing up. Ahhhh, memories. The early snow definitely put us in the Christmas spirit earlier this year. I don't know when I would have been ready without the snow.

  7. Your tree looks beautiful! I don't put up a tree anymore. I live by myself in 430 sq ft and it's just not worth the hassle But I enjoy everyone else's! That being said, back in the days of bigger condos and roommates we would put our tree up a few weeks before Christmas. They aren't even selling trees here yet! When I was little we'd go to the tree farm the weekend after Thanksgiving and tag our tree, and then return a few weeks later to cut it and bring it home.

So far it's been a really warm winter in Boston. I did hear Christmas music yesterday in a store. I'm not ready for it yet.

  8. I like to put up my tree around Thanksgiving. A few days before, shortly after - doesn't really bother me. But my husband is definitely a "no trees before Thanksgiving" person. This year, I convinced him to let me start putting it up yesterday so that it would be up before we travel for the holiday...that way when we get home, it's up and ready to go and we can enjoy it.
