The Gradual Two-Year Transformation of the Living Room

May 18, 2023

Sometimes room renovations happen over the span of a few months, and sometimes they take time. Ever since painting the living room, we have been slowly making tweaks and adjustments to the layout and furnishings. The living room started off as a conglomeration of furniture and decor from our last house. But over the last two years, we've swapped a few pieces in and out, and although I have big plans for the living room, I've been patient (mostly) and grateful to have a place that has come together without too much stress.

Here's what the living room looked like when we moved in 👇🏻

Here's what it looked like a year ago 👇🏻

And here's where we are today 👇🏻.

Two Years Later

At some point, I think that the living room deserves to have furniture that is specifically chosen for it. However, I am taking my time to make any major decisions on furniture until the overall design is more solidified. Despite this, there are times when certain furniture and decor simply call out to you, and you know you have to have it no matter what. Recently, I acquired a mixed-material coffee table made of metal and stone, and I absolutely adore its classic style and unique shape. It's also an upgrade from the black hole illusion the previous cottagey coffee table gave.

Although I don't have every design detail planned for this space, I am sure about including skylights, beams, and architectural trim on the walls in a contrasting color. Additionally, we had considered replacing the fireplace with a big arched window like the one we had in our previous home, but we have ultimately decided to keep the fireplace. The current millwork is super charming and beautiful, but I might upgrade to some marble.

As far as changing up the layout, I can't imagine anything but two identical sofas facing each other! The room is too perfectly symmetrical to mess with, and I would like just fully to embrace it. Somehow, we should bring in the big leather armchair from the bonus room because it's Chris's favorite seat in the house, and this is a really central room to everything that we do.

I also hung this giant new framed canvas painting above the sofa, and regardless of what we decide to do with this room, I hope it always belongs here.

I think Cricket likes the room too.

  1. Such a warm, cozy room. Can you tell me the dimensions? I am planning a room addition to my old home and I’m in a quandary as to how big I should make it.

  2. This room is my new inspiration! Can you tell me what those other two chairs are? The ones closest to the camera? We only see half of them but are they boucle?

  3. I would love to hear your tips on furniture selection. How to select pieces that go together and make a room complete without being too matchy matchy. We still havent furnished our living room other tban an old couch we brought with us when we moved and I dont know where to start. I love seeing the evolution of your home. Good luck with the study!

  4. Have you considered swapping the paintings behind each of the sofas? The dark one hanging behind the light sofa and vice versa might bring some interesting contrast and balance. Love everything in the room.

  5. I would love to hear your take on which details you paint when you paint a room all one color including trim. I have so many quesitons.. Do you paint the window trim? The outlets? What about the doors? where do you stop the new color? What about if your bathroom or closet opens to a different color? I can't find any good blogs or designer tips that address this but I know you have some good opinions. Please help!

  6. The room looks beautiful! But I also miss the wall of windows. I cannot help but dream about a spectacular wall that includes both! If there’s a designer that could pull it off, it’s you. I see a spectacular, grand fireplace flanked by full walls of glass. It could be spectacular. 😍😍😍

  7. I would never have thought to have blocked the fireplace or have the back of chairs to it. Do the chairs swivel or how do you enjoy it?

  8. Have you tried scrubbing off the spot above the fireplace? I have this same issue and it’s recurring. Maybe also make sure the chimney is clean? We struggle with this!
