So last year we started the tradition (I guess we can call it that now that this is our second year doing it!) to commission an illustration of our family for our Christmas card. Once again, we hired my friend from art school whom we've kept in touch with, Lance Fry, and once again he blew us away:
Lance did a great job working in a lot of details and life events from this year. The addition of Charly puts a smile on our faces. My baby bump. The Grand Teton mountain range in the background signifying our move to Idaho. It's been a really, really big year for us. It's been eventful and stressful and a year we are grateful for and grateful to have survived. Since most of our friends and family that we send holiday cards to read our blog or know most everything that has happened in our lives, this year, I opted for a short hand-written note taped to the back with festive washi tape, instead of a typed message, which feels so personal...but we'll see if that tradition carries on to next year. ;) #theclaw
Both originals from last year:
and this year:
are framed and hanging in our home and we can't wait to add another one next year. Anyone else have a fun holiday card tradition? I will say a commissioned illustration sure beats trying to get Greta...and Chris excited about family pictures.
[…] card, that almost wasn’t. We were going to do another illustrated card like the last 2 years (2013 and 2012), but in the eleventh hour, things didn’t work out. So, last week, I dressed Greta […]

I LOVE this. Seriously love love love. All the details, oh my goodness. I really might have to try this out next year!
There are so many details to this card! We tape our cards on our kitchen cabinets and I keep looking at it and smile. That Lance is so talented. and I LOVED the hand written note. Your hand must be in rehab after doing that for everyone!
I love this! Happy Holidays.

I love the expression on Charley's sweet face! She conveys all of the resigned indignation of having to wear antler ears. So sweet! This is a great idea...now you have me on the lookout for a local artist here who would do the same for us. I love it! Merry Christmas!
